Welcome to the Visitors Centre
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight has been awarded
three Certificates of Excellence, season 2005-2006, by the Lincolnshire
County Council.
1. Best Temporary Exhibition for ‘The Tallboy and the Lone Queen
of the North’.
2. Best Value for Money in the Heritage Service.
3. Friendliest site in the Heritage Service.
In
1986, under a unique arrangement between Lincolnshire County Council and
the Royal Air Force, it became possible to view the historic aircraft
of the BBMF at their home base at RAF Coningsby. Since then the BBMF Visitors’
Centre has welcomed over 335,000 people.
Visitors
are led on a guided tour around the BBMF hangar by knowledgeable and enthusiastic
volunteer guides, who give freely of their time and who, in many cases,
have first hand experience of the aircraft. They are keen to ensure that
the public appreciate this living tribute to the sacrifices made by RAF
aircrew and ground crew during the Second World War.
Entry to the exhibition centre, souvenir shop and car park is free; there
is a small charge for guided tours of the hangar, with special rates for
groups.
- Entry to the BBMF hangar is by guided tour only.
- See these magnificent aircraft at close quarters, and observe skilled
and dedicated technicians working to maintain them in flying order.
- Well stocked shop offering an extensive range of aviation gifts.
- Permanent exhibition gallery exploring Lincolnshire's links with
the RAF plus regular programme of temporary exhibitions.
- Facilities for the disabled, including toilets and wheelchair (no
electric wheelchairs allowed in BBMF Hangar).
- Large car park but limited spaces for disabled parking and coaches
(please book in advance).
- Small picnic area, hot and cold drinks available.
Open Monday to Friday 10.00am - 5.00pm
Guided tours of the hangar from 10.30am - 3.30pm
(3.00pm November - February)
Normally closed at weekends, Bank Holidays and for two
weeks at Christmas/New Year.
Unfortunately, due to RAF commitments, we cannot guarantee
the presence of any particular aircraft or public access to the hangar.
